SVA Small Group Networking and Project/Paper Exchange

Those working on visual, multi-modal, and non-traditional projects sometimes lack peers to offer feedback and insights. In an effort to support networking among visual/multi-modal scholars, the SVA will host a project/writing exchange workshop this fall. If you are looking for a way to meet others working in the field of visual anthropology and are interested in both receiving and giving feedback on papers or projects related to visual/multi-modal scholarship, then this workshop is for you. Participants will exchange work and share their feedback either at the AAA conference or virtually.

This workshop is intended for scholars, artists, or practitioners whose work relates to SVA themes, including visual or multi-modal projects, or papers about or drawing from visual or multi-modal materials or methods. We invite anyone to participate, regardless of academic affiliation or SVA membership, as long as your work relates to the SVA themes. The goal is to generate support for visual/multi-modal scholars and provide an engaged experience.

Interested participants need to send a 300 word abstract to Sarah Franzen (sfranzen[at]lsu.edu) by September 20, 2022. This abstract must include the topic of the proposed paper/project, preferred form of exchange (e.g. paper by word doc, or video by vimeo), and preference for meeting as a group at the AAA or virtually. Organizers will cluster participants into groups of 3 around common themes and will inform participants of their group by October 1, 2022. Organizers will try to arrange groups according to their preference to meet virtually or at the AAA, but if it is not possible to form complete groups that are attending the AAA the default will be for groups to meet virtually. Participants then need to send a full draft of the paper/project to their group by October 20, 2022. We ask that each group then sets aside 3 hours (1 hour per project) either at the AAA or virtually prior to December 1, 2022 to offer feedback and workshop the projects/papers of their group. These do not need to be consecutive hours and the groups can arrange the feedback sessions in anyway that works for them, but we ask that they complete the feedback by December 1, 2022. If participants need virtual assistance, such as a host for zoom, organizers are available to help set up a virtual space for this workshopping. Finally, we ask that each group offers 1 paragraph of feedback to the organizers by December 31, 2022 so that we can learn and adjust in the future.

We hope that this can benefit scholars and practitioners and offer a small way to meet new colleagues and gain important feedback for moving your papers/projects forward. Please share this with others that may be interested.
