When / Where: November 7th to December 4th, 2010, Du Mois Gallery, New Orleans
Deadline for proposals: 20 Sept 2010
Contact: Craig Campbell (craig.campbell@mail.utexas.edu), www.ethnographicterminalia.org

Ethnographic Terminalia (2010) is scheduled to coincide with the 109th Meeting of the American
Anthropological Association (AAA) in New Orleans. It will take place at a number of sites around
New Orleans with the flagship exhibition at the DuMois Gallery, in the emerging Freret Street Arts
& Cultural District. We seek proposals from artists/ethnographers/artist-ethnographers for
inclusion of their work in this year’s exhibit.

The works exhibited in Ethnographic Terminalia emerge through a desire to produce art as a process or
product of research. As we demonstrated in the Ethnographic Terminalia 2009 exhibition, the
juxtaposition of works that bear nothing more in common than loose disciplinary or discursive
histories—languages of observation and description—produces what might be analogously seen as a
contemporary cabinet of curiosities. The works exist and generate their own logical structures as
autonomous units but they are also part of a larger collection, accruing and developing meaning
through proximity to other works. In this case the curatorial task of locating the various works in
the gallery is critical.

Call for Participation
We seek proposals for both solo and collaborative works that can be installed with a relatively small
footprint. Works can be in any medium: site-specific installation, painting, photography,
printmaking, sculpture, video art, film (short or long), etc. We may be able to accommodate
performance-based works this year in a separate gallery. We will consider proposals for works that
are either silent or that have an audio component contained by headphones. To date, Ethnographic
Terminalia 2010 will feature the works of Susan Hiller, Robert Willm, and Fiamma Montezemulo,
along with works by several local artists that will be featured in their own room at the DuMois
Gallery. With greater support from the American Anthropological Association, opening-night
sponsorship from Stella Artois, and more advance time to promote the event, Ethnographic Terminalia
2010 will be another unique opportunity to exhibit your work. The deadline for proposals is September 20, 2010. Please email the following information as an
attached word document to Craig Campbell (craig.campbell@mail.utexas.edu):
• Name
• Contact details
• CV
• Short Biography
• Abstract/Summary of your work (along with a title of your project)
• Medium
• Dimensions (when installed)
• Installation requirements
Installation and Scheduling

Please note that we require works to arrive in New Orleans between the 1st and 5th of November
2010 to coordinate installation. If you are unable to work with these dates please indicate this on your proposal.

The DuMois has four rooms and a yard space exclusively available for our use. It offers
approximately 800 square feet of exhibition space with ten-foot ceilings throughout. We have access
to a number of other gallery spaces as well. These may be more amenable to your proposed
installation, so please give us an ideal scenario for your work. In your proposal please specify installation
requirements and the general floor and wall space required for your work. Again, we stress that gallery space islimited and we endeavor to share this experience with as many participants as possible.

Ethnographic Terminalia (New Orleans 2010) will run from November 7th to December 4th, 2010.
The Opening Reception will take place on Friday 19 November 2010 (subject to change).
We are also planning to host a critique for the exhibitors. This will be a closed event, allowing us
the freedom to engage in meaningful conversation with other exhibitors. This is scheduled for
Saturday 20 or Sunday 21, November 2010 at 5pm (subject to change).

For more information please contact Craig Campbell or visit www.ethnographicterminalia.org

ANTH 499: Anthropology of the Dance and Human Movement provides an in-depth introduction to the anthropological study of dance and other human movement systems in cultural contexts. It is designed especially for students with little or no background in socio-cultural anthropology or the social sciences. The course includes reading the works of major figures in the field, and learning how to study dances, signed languages and ritual events from an anthropological perspective. Students will also learn about socio-cultural theory and observation, doing fieldwork, movement literacy, problems of subjectivity and objectivity, and personal anthropology. The course allows the student to enroll at any time, and then have 6 months to complete their course.

Dr. Drid Williams was a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer for 30 years before becoming a social anthropologist. She completed graduate degrees (Dip.Soc.Anth., B.Litt., D.Phil.) from St. Hughes College, Oxford, in 1976. She has a book entitled Ideokinesis and Dancing, presently in preparation at the University of Illinois Press (Urbana-Champaign). Her book, Anthropology and Human Movement: Ten Lectures (2004) is a text for the ANTH 499 course, as are other articles she has written. During a long career, she has done fieldwork among the Carmelite nuns, the Dominican friars, and the Royal Ballet Company in England and among Aboriginal communities in Northern Queensland, Australia. She has taught in Moi University in Kenya, at The University of Sydney (Australia), and New York and Indiana universities in the United States. She recently returned (July 2009) from Zhuhai, China, where she taught for two years at United International College. She was founder of the Journal for the Anthropological Study of Human Movement [JASHM] and has been Senior Editor since its inception in 1980. She is the architect of a theory of human actions called semasiology.

On Saturday afternoon, May 15, 2010 from 2:00-3:30 pm, Dr. Haidy
Geismar will lead a new “SAFE Tour” of the Metropolitan Museum
of Art. SAFE tours provide an “insider’s look” at a museum collection
and focus on artworks and artifacts that have dubious provenance or are
presumed to be illicit.

An anthropologist, Dr. Geismar is an Assistant Professor in the Museum
Studies Program and the Department of Anthropology of New York University.
Her research interests are visual anthropology and material culture; cultural
and intellectual property; digital technologies in relation to understandings of
materiality, museum practices (collection, archiving, preservation and
exhibition) and photography; new economic forms; and the anthropology
of Oceania. She is editor of Material World.

Her tour will be based in the Pacific Hall of the Rockefeller Wing of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. She will talk about the museum’s history
of collection and display of Pacific artifacts and trace the background of
the Rockefeller Collection. She will also provide a background to the tribal
art market and discuss the way it works and the impact it has had on local
cultures. This history will be juxtaposed with the ways in which museums in
the Pacific now grapple with the legacy of ethnographic collection and the
wholesale loss of artifacts to museums in far away places. She will cover
recent controversies in cultural property claims and illegal trade in Pacific
artifacts and muse on possible strategies for museums to ethically negotiate
this terrain.

Reservations are required as space is limited. The cost is $30; $10 for
full-time students with valid ID. The ticket price includes admission to the
Museum. For reservations, go to http://savingantiquities.org/whatwedosafetoursGeismar.php

SAFE/Saving Antiquities for Everyone [http://www.savingantiquities.org] is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving cultural heritage worldwide.

This roundtable discussion is being organized by the SVA Ethics Committee to continue, deepen, and expand the critical reflections and dialogues on visual ethics. Highlighting this year’s theme of “Circulation”—including “what is at stake in these processes, and for whom; and what their consequences might be”—this session is intended to explore the ethical considerations implicated and involved in the intersections of images and circulation. Key issues raised in previous sessions (the 2007 AAA special event discussions and the 2008 and 2009 roundtables on visual ethics) that can be elaborated on, developed, or added to include: (a) negotiating representational authority; (b) the decontextualization/circulation of images (and the problem of lack of control); (c) presumed vs. actual outcomes of image display; (d) relations with and responsibilities toward research subjects/communities; (e) balancing privacy vs. publicity (depending on subjects’ wishes); (f) the importance of communication with and consent of subjects/communities at every stage of the research process; and (g) the collection and dissemination of visual materials within the context of globally expanding media savvy and presence.

The SVA Ethics Committee thus welcomes any proposals that can serve as focal cases for collaborative discussions of real-world ethical considerations and dilemmas faced by anthropologists (and others) working with, thinking about, and engaged in the circulation of visual data.

Those interested in participating should contact Jonathan S. Marion (jsmarion@gmail.com) as soon as possible, and by March 28th at the latest.
