According to the Old Norse saga, Egil, son of Skalla-Grim, lived near a church, was buried under the alter, and his bones were later moved. Archaeologists working for over a decade in Western Iceland, found an empty burial under an alter near a longhouse. The evidence supports an argument that they may have uncovered the home of legendary Viking Egil and raises a controversy on the usefulness of ancient texts in the discovery and interpretation of archaeological sites.
