Abstract: A portrait of filmmaker and activist John Kennedy Marshall who began his career in the 1950s documenting the lives of the Ju/’hoansi people of Namibia—among the last remaining hunter- gatherers—for anthropological audiences. In the 1980s Marshall became an activist helping the Ju/’hoansi fight for land and water rights. He made important contributions to cinéma vérité filmmaking and leaves behind an extensive ethnographic film archive including over 20 films on the Ju/’hoansi. Film Audience: general, educational - anthropology, sociology, filmmaking, African studies Role of the Anthropologist / Collaboration: Alice Apley is an anthropologist and filmmaker who studied anthropological representations of the Kalahari Bushmen (including the Ju/’hoansi) as part of her graduate studies. She has worked in educational film and television as a fundraiser and in a variety of production roles and as a video production teacher for high school students. Alice holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from New York University and currently conducts social science research for RMC Research Corporation. As her first film, Remembering John Marshall, combines her knowledge of documentary filmmaking and the Ju/'hoansi. Although they never had the chance to meet John Marshall, she, David and the crew interviewed several of his friends and collaborators in addition to conducting research on John and studying his films.
