Abstract: A film portrait of a Mbororo Fulani patriarch, Al-Hadji Isa, his savvy wives, and their rebellious daughters. The documentary provides a glimpse into their everyday lives, religious and moral practices, as well as the political opinions the Al-Hadji has to offer from his particular corner of the world. With a critical but sympathetic gaze, it chronicles and investigates the process and rationale by which Amina, a 16-year-old daughter of hte family, is forced into an unwanted marriage. While the attempted escape had been in vain, Amina has inscribed her silent protest on the walls of her mother's hut and onto the film, serving as a testimony of women's resistance and resilience under an oppressive patriarchy. Production Date: 11/01/2006 Email: jieli@fas.harvard.edu Running Time: 50 Medium: DVD Film Purpose: While the Fulani people have been the subject of various ethnographic films in the past, this film attempts to paint a personalized portrait of a single family. At times humorous, at times poignant, it lets the subjects tell their own stories through words, images, and silences. The filmmaker's presence is palpable without being visible, while her camera maintains a respectful and critical distance. Film Audience: General audience interested in issues concerning women, Islam, and Africa as well as anthropologists. Filmmaker: Jie Li, Harvard University Keywords: marriage, Fulani, Islam |
