VAR SUPPLEMENTS: Classroom Activities and Discussion Questions

Zoe Bray’s “Anthropology with a Paintbrush: Naturalist-Realist Painting as ‘Thick Description‘” (VAR 31-2, Fall 2015) advances the practice of naturalist-realist portrait-painting as an under-explored method and medium of visual anthropology where slow-paced observations and interaction provide opportunities for making “thick descriptions” on canvas.

Suggested study exercises and questions

  1. Exercise: Take a drawing tool (charcoal, pencil, crayon, or paintbrush..) and paper, and spend about 20 minutes drawing an object of your choice in front of you (this could be simply a cup or a book. Ideally place it in natural light, rather than under artificial lighting. Sit or stand a meter or so away from it – i.e. Not too close and not too far away. Take breaks from time to time). Reflect on this process of visually studying an object.

How has drawing helped you to understand this object? Did taking breaks help you to see better? What effect did standing closer or further away from the object have?

  1. Repeat the exercise, this time spending a little more time, and drawing another person who is willing to sit for you. It can be a friend or a fellow-student you do not know so well.

What happened during the drawing session? Did you chat? What did you pay attention to? How do you feel drawing helped you to see the person? What new knowledge about the person do you feel you got from drawing her or him? Do you feel you know the person better in some way or other?

  1. Hold a mirror to the side of your face and look into it with the eye closest to it. In the mirror’s reflection you can look at your drawing in reverse.

What can you see in your drawing that you didn’t see before? What do you think of your drawn interpretation of the model? How do you think it could be improved?

Think about how the artists see what they see, and what they choose to depict. What do you think they are looking out for? How do you think they are transferring this knowledge onto the paper/canvas? What can you speculate about these artists’ particular individual sensibility, and the role that technical skill plays in their way of depicting?

  1. Sit for someone else.

Think about how the person drawing you is looking at you. How does it feel to be represented? What do you think about the drawing done of you? What do you think the artist/student has ‘captured’ of you? Why? Does having sat for someone else help you in your own drawing? How?

The Society for Visual Anthropology screens the best ethnographic films and video productions at our annual SVA Film & Media Festival, held in conjunction with the American Anthropological Association (AAA) Annual Meeting. This gives independent filmmakers as well as distributors broad access to a market of several thousand anthropologists and educators.

Ethnographic film and video defined broadly as works created as the result of ethnographic fieldwork or those which use, are informed by, or illustrate the principles of anthropological theory or methods.

Call for the 2015 Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival

Calling All Filmmakers!

The 2015 Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival is coming on 2-6 October 2015, to be held at the Wonderful Theatre in Taipei.

Entry submission deadline: 20 May 2015

TIEFF is organized by the Taiwan Association of Visual Ethnography (TAVE), a non-profit organization dedicated to greater public awareness of documentary and ethnographic films.

The central theme of the biennial’s 8th season, “Scenes of Life,” invites audiences to participate in a multicultural investigation of the human experience as told through diverse life stories.

We’re looking to screen films in the following categories:

A) Central Theme: Scenes of Life
Ethnographic films, produced at any time, which tell unique life stories that reveal our shared human experience.

B) New Vision:
Ethnographic films on any subject, completed between 2013 and 2015.

Call for Co-Editor of “Visual Anthropology Review”

The Society for Visual Anthropology invites applications for the co-editorship of its journal, “Visual Anthropology Review” (VAR). One of the current co-editors will finish his service to VAR in December of 2015 and SVA seeks an individual to transition into the position of a new co-editor during the Fall 2015 semester.  The typical period for a co-editorship is three years.

Details about the Position and the Journal

Qualifications of the Co-Editor:

1. A PhD in Anthropology and a background of teaching, research and publishing in fields related to visual anthropology.

2. Proven organizational and editorial skills.

VAR is a biannual academic, peer-reviewed journal that publishes 12-15 articles per year.  The co-editors are assisted by the journal’s film review editor and book review editor, who manage the publication of 15-20 book and film reviews per year.

The Responsibilities of the Co-Editor:

1. Edit the journal under the protocols established by Wiley-Blackwell and the American Anthropological Association.

2. Work with Wiley-Blackwell to maintain the established workflow, to meet the deadlines and copy requirements for two issues per year.

3. Solicit articles and suggest ideas for special issues or articles.

4. Receive articles and manage them through the review process. This involves maintaining records on each submitted article; engaging two reviewers for a “double-blind” peer review for each article; reading the submitted articles and the peer reviews and contacting the authors as to the final decision.

VAR is published by the American Anthropological Association and promotes the discussion of visual studies, broadly conceived. Visual studies include visual aspects of human behavior and the use of visual media in anthropological research, representation, and teaching. We welcome articles, photo-essays, reviews, and commentary on the use of multimedia, still photography, film, video, and non-camera-generated images, as well as on visual ideologies, indigenous media, applied visual anthropology, art, dance, gesture, sign language, human movement, museology, architecture, and material culture.

The journal has produced special issues on topics such as “Ethnographic Filmmaking in China,” “Engaging Visual Anthropology in the Entangled Lives of Species,” “Visual Representations of Aboriginal Australia,” “HIV/AIDS Education and Southern Africa,” and “Visual Latin America.” VAR has an international readership. It publishes work by scholars and artists, academics, and practitioners throughout the world. VAR welcomes work from all subfields of anthropology, as well as multidisciplinary work in the fine arts, and in the sciences and liberal arts.

2015 AAA ANNUAL MEETING: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The SVA welcomes a variety of individual paper and session proposals for consideration at this year’s Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado (November 18-22, 2015). The theme for the meeting isFamiliar Strange,” which provides a rich context for exploring the innovative and exciting work conducted under the broad rubric of visual anthropology.

Susan and Fiona are more than happy to work with you on your paper, poster, or roundtable sessions. We are happy to assist session organizers with the structuring of their proposals. For all submissions, participants must abide by the AAA rules regarding roles, registration, deadlines, and fees. No exceptions.

Installations invite anthropological knowledge off the beaten path of the written conference paper. Presenters may propose performances, recitals, conversations, author-meets-critic roundtables, salon reading workshops, oral history recording sessions and other alternative, creative forms of intellectual expression for consideration. Selected Installations will be curated for off-site exhibition and tied to the official AAA conference program.

Save The Date: The Freiburger Film Forum Is Turning 30!

Since its foundation in 1985, the Freiburger Film Forum <http://www.freiburger-filmforum.de/>  has become one of the most highly regarded European festivals devoted to intercultural dialogue. Its curated program of international feature films and documentaries is accompanied by panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and readings. Every two years in Freiburg, it opens a window to the world with current and historical productions from and about Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania – exploring different cultures and ways of life in a globalized world from an international perspective.

We will be celebrating our 30th anniversary by looking back on the festival’s history and presenting highlights, classics, and rare cinematic gems. We will also feature a retrospective of the Sensory Ethnography Lab in Boston, which produces innovative documentaries that inspire us to reflect on what we see and hear in ethnographic films. Of course, we will also be showing outstanding works about selected themes.

We are especially pleased to introduce our new up-and-coming filmmakers’ category. On May 11-13, the Student´s Film Forum <http://www.studentsfilmforum.com/>  will be offering young filmmakers a platform to present and discuss their intercultural thesis films and debut features.

We also expect many international guests at our special anniversary, including Judith and David MacDougall – two important ethnological filmmakers known for their Turkana trilogy and the book Transcultural Cinema.

Digital Image Exhibit at the 2014 AAA in DC

We are pleased to announce the Digital Image Exhibit for the 2014 AAA Media Festival. The Digital Image Exhibit will be run as a looping display at the upcoming meetings in DC, and later hosted on the Society for Visual Anthropology’s website.

Conference participants may submit up to two (and only two) images for consideration in this year’s exhibit. (Note: submissions with more than two images will not be considered.) If you would like to submit your images, please follow the directions below.

Please format your photographs as computer/projection quality 5×7 or 7×5 (@96dpi) JPEG files. Email all images for consideration to digixAAA@gmail.com by November 15th at the very latest. In the body of the email, for each image please supply:

  • A short title
  • The date and location of the image
  • The name of the photographer (i.e. confirm that you are the photographer or that you have use rights for the image)
  • A brief caption (50 words max!) and any pertinent publication information
  • IF the image is related to a presentation at the meeting (please include the day & time)

The Festival

Urban Photo Fest has evolved through a number of conversations, research initiatives and exhibitions involving a wide range of partners and contributors from the areas of visual arts, film and photography, education, urban research and the social sciences. Originally, the festival started out as a series of annual Urban Encounters symposia held at Tate Britain. Eventually, these symposia developed into a series of well-attended workshops, walks, exhibitions and portfolio reviews. People seemed to be enjoying these conversations, and noticeable, they kept coming back for more.

In addition to the main conference at Tate Britain, we are offering a series of walks on the conference weekend Sunday, where participants will be encouraged to think about and experience movement and flow through a variety of urban spaces. And of course, there are the exhibitions with Habitus (graduates from the International MA in Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London) at the Menier Gallery, Movement (Association of Urban Photographers) at the Silver Print Gallery, and Close to Nowhere (a selection of images from a ten year project focusing on global cities) at the Greenwich Gallery.

Which brings us to this year’s festival theme of Movement, Mobilities and Migrations. These words mean different things to urbanists, photographers and artists; and that is what we want to encourage people to explore throughout the festival events. Hopefully, people will also take this opportunity to experience their own collective and private migrations around London over the five days, to attend the conference, workshop and seminar; go on walks, visit exhibitions and book onto the masterclass. Most importantly, the festival encourages debate about the nature of contemporary photography, and the possibility to network with others interested in this increasingly vital area of visual and urban practice.

About the photographer

Urban Photo Fest is pleased to announce this year’s masterclass will be presented by international photographer Peter Marlow, former president of Magnum Photos. Peter’s work focuses on apparently incidental scenes that speak of social relations. His images have a compelling poetic quality and address notions of stasis, movement and change.

 

About the Masterclass

Following an initial presentation of his work and discussion of related theoretical and technical issues, participants will introduce their images. The Masterclass will focus on how to build a visual story and participants will be given a working brief based on the themes discussed, and then work on producing a number of images to bring back to the group for feedback and critique.

 

What you will need

In order to participate you will need to submit a short description of the visual story that you intend to develop during the Masterclass along with a portfolio (up to 10 images)

 

Due to the duration of the course participants are advised to produce and edit their work digitally. The images will need to be edited and put into a Power Point format for next day feedback.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT ANTHROPOLOGISTS,

EMERGING LEADER IN ANTHROPOLOGY PROGRAM

 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS DEADLINE: 20 October, 2014 

 The National Association of Student Anthropologists (NASA), a section of the American Anthropological Association, in partnership with the American Anthropological Association, the Society for Visual Anthropology (SVA), the Anthropology and Environment Society (AES), and the Society for Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology (SLACA), announces the 2014 Emerging Leaders in Anthropology Program (ELAP). We welcome students to submit targeted applications for one of four program spots. Program participants will receive training in AAA and NASA governance, contemporary issues in anthropology on this year’s selected tracks, mentoring from anthropologists engaged in participants’ area of interest, and will have the opportunity to attend a special meeting at the AAA Washington, DC conference in December.

 I. Program contents 

Scholarship 

— $500 toward expenses for attendance at the AAA conference in Washington, D.C.;

— free membership to the National Association of Student Anthropologists;

— conference fee reimbursement for AAA Washington, D.C.

AAA Washington, D.C. 2014 

— AAA governance training;

— NASA governance participation;

— ELAP Cohort Training Lunch: issues in anthropology, fellowship/scholarship/funding discussion.

Mentoring and professional training paper 

— pairing with a senior anthropologist;

— production of a professional research training paper (PTP);

— students are free to use their PTPs as they see fit, but a special arrangement may be possible with Student Anthropologist, subject to approval by the journal’s editorial board.

II. Eligibility 

i) Any student, ii) regardless of nationality, iii) enrolled at least half-time in a program in anthropology (major, minor, concentration or interdisciplinary area where the focus is anthropology), iv) having completed at least two years of tertiary education at the time of application, and v) able to travel to the AAA meeting in Washington, D.C. in December 2014.

Current officers of the National Association of Student Anthropologists and partnering sections are ineligible to apply. 

III. Professional training paper topics 

Student shall have the opportunity to produce an original piece of research during the program with the assistance of participating mentors on a contemporary topic in anthropology. Students will have several months after the completion of the AAA meeting to work on this paper, and may have an opportunity for publication.

Track 1, Social theory across disciplinary, subfield and national traditions: students in this track are asked to address their professional training paper toward issues related to anthropological practices across spatial, cultural, and topical dimensions. Students should scrutinize the relationship of these dimensions to the historic and contemporary differences and similarities of disparate bodies of theory. How, for example, have positivist paradigms informed some research programs while being rejected in others? Why have certain ‘national’ traditions of anthropology taken the shape that they have?

Track 2, Perspectives on anthropology as discipline, career, and identity: much has been written on the self-situating of the anthropologist, both as this relates to methodological considerations and as a source of anthropological insight. Professional organization and practices in anthropology across the subfields are often linked to identity, as is the choice to pursue a career in anthropology. Students in this track are asked to consider contemporary theory alongside their own experiences on a topic related to anthropology as a discipline, career, and identity.

— commitments and engagements outside of formal education, including community and political activism and professional service;

— demonstrated knowledge of contemporary issues within the track chosen (engaged/activist anthropology or world anthropologies).
