8th VISCULT – FESTIVAL 2.-5.10.2008 in Joensuu, Finland
An international festival of visual culture

The main theme of Viscult 2008 is ”Transformations ”
The programme consists of ethnographic, anthropological and documentary films.

The festival programme is now complete and the website is updated: The programme includes 23 films from 14 countries.

Everything changes constantly: cultures, societies, environment, climate change and transform in surprising ways, and these cut across the known and the unknown history of the planet. Reasons for transformations can be environmental, technological, economical, cultural, social and political. Viscult is looking for films which show these transformations in human life.

The Festival of Visual Culture is a personal event with the majority of filmmakers present to introduce their work encouraging the opportunity for profound discussions of the films, film-making, and culture. The festival works also in close co-operation with the University of Joensuu and its students.
The festival utilizes modern technology to bridge geographical obstacles and to our knowledge is the first film festival in the world that streams films and discussions live on the Internet all over the world. This provides the filmmakers, producers, distributors etc. a whole new way of marketing their films worldwide. The North Karelia University of Applied Sciences as a partner makes this possible by providing the newest technology.

Visual anthropology lectures are also a part of the festival. One lecture will be held this year: PhD Ilkka Ruohonen: “Surrealist sensibility in ethnographic documentaries – Ethnographic documentary in the Finnish Academic tradition”. Lecture is organized together with the department of Finnish and cultural research at the Joensuu University.

The main organiser of Viscult is North Karelian Regional Film Association. In addition to forementioned partners, Viscult is also supported by the Ministry of education, The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture (AVEK), the Arts Council of Finland, the City of Joensuu, the University of Joensuu, The Regional Council of North Karelia and local businesses.
